The Importance Of Lubrication For Your Gearbox

Fluid is the life blood of your transmission. If you don't take pains to maintain your transmission's fluids at appropriate levels, and you don't see that it's changed out periodically, you are asking for trouble. Even worse, you will undoubtedly create some very expensive problems for yourself that could have been easily avoided.

Your transmission's fluid is critical for three basic reasons. First, the fluid acts as the hydraulic element of the system. When properly filled the pressure created by the fluid is an important part of what regulates gear changes in vehicles with automatic transmissions. This underscores the reason why it is so important to periodically check your transmission fluid levels. If those levels are too low, it translates directly into lower pressure inside the transmission, which can lead to greater wear and tear, and ultimately, slippage.

Second, and related to that first point, is that as a lubricant, it makes those gear changes smoother and more seamless. Smooth shifting translates into less wear and tear on the mechanical components of your vehicle's transmission. Mechanical wear is inevitable, of course, but you can greatly extend the life of your transmission by ensuring proper fluid levels.

Lastly, the fluid inside the transmission acts as a coolant. Heat can cause the seals inside your transmission to begin to break down. By keeping fill levels optimal, you reduce the risk of wear on the seals, which translates directly into a longer life for y our transmission.

There are few systems more critical to your vehicle than its transmission. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Attending to regular maintenance, including keeping a close, regular check of your transmission's fluid levels is a key component to ensuring that your car serves you faithfully for years to come.
